ESG Leaders Awards 2007
The first IPE and TBLI ESG Leaders awards heralded a grand occasion for all those involved in investing with respect for environmental, social and governance factors – both in the growing acceptance and adoption of this approach and in the high quality of our winning submissions. Indeed, the ESG field has never been greener and we are happy to recognise the excellence and thought leader- ship that has developed in this area – on the part of both investors and providers – over the past few years.
The pension fund of the UK’s Environment Agency – our Best Investor in ESG for 2007 – was an early adopter of ESG factors in its investment approach, not just to match the conservation focus of its sponsor, but also in recognition of the fact that it expects better returns from better governed companies in respect to environmental, social and governance factors. Among the highlights of its approach are its annual Responsible Entrepreneurship Report, written by its private equity manager. The fund also has an ambition to vote on all environmental corporate gover- nance issues worldwide, where practical. Recently it led the charge in a shareholder motion against Shell. F&C is our Best Asset Manager Investing in ESG in 2007 and the firm traces its ESG heritage back to the early nineteenth century, through the lineage of its major shareholder Friends Provident. It has a 16-strong governance and sustain- able team and in a recent analysis by the consultancy Mercer on its performance against the United Nations Prin- ciples for Responsible Investment it was a global leader in three and top quartile in six. Goldman Sachs’ Environmental Policy Framework took away the prize for Most Innovative Development in ESG, while Innovest Strategic Value Advisors won the award for Best ESG Consultancy or Research House. Finally, KLD Research & Analytics, with its 20-year experience in the area, wins the award for Outstanding Contribution to ESG. The next ESG Leaders Awards Ceremony will be at the TBLI CONFERENCE™ EUROPE 2008 in Amsterdam.
